Despicable Me Minion Rush Windows Phone 8 Lumia 1520

December is shaping up to be a great month for Gameloft fans. Last week, the mobile publishing giant released Dungeon Hunter 4 for Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. Mobile Windows platforms need all the action-RPGs they can get. Dungeon Hunter is also one of 15 titles that Gameloft announced back in August.

Another one of those titles – perhaps the most highly anticipated one – is Despicable Me: Minion Rush. 3D endless runners are crazy popular, to say nothing of people’s love for the Despicable Me movies. Those folks’ hearts should be a flutter today because Minion Rush is finally available on Windows Phone 8!

This release coincides with the Despicable Me 2 Blu-ray and DVD, which just came out today. The promised Windows 8 version of Minion Rush is also now available. Neither Windows version has Xbox support, which should come as no surprise after Dungeon Hunter 4 and Asphalt 8 released without it.

Strive to be the best

Despicable Me Minion Rush Windows Phone 8

Minion Rush opens with a short cinematic starring the Despicable Me films’ adorable minions. These guys (who closely resemble Cheetos) live for nothing else than to please their employer Gru. One day they discover Gru has implemented a Minion of the Week program, complete with shiny trophy for the star minion. Soon the minions set out to win the award – by outrunning their peers in a series of obstacle courses.

If you’ve played the Temple Run games, you should have a pretty good idea of how Minion Rush plays. Swipe left or right on screen to move around, dodging obstacles and collecting bananas (this game’s high-Potassium currency). Swiping up dodges, whereas downward swipes slide. Spiral-shaped sections of the level require tilting in order to keep your minion balanced and on-track.

Windows Phone specifics

Despicable Me Minion Rush Windows Phone 8

Minion Rush features some beautiful 3D graphics. The art style matches the looks of the movies quite well, with bright and welcoming colors and lots of minion cuteness. The actual frame rate could be a little better on Windows Phone – a common problem with Gameloft titles. But the game still plays quite smoothly, so frame rate hardly becomes an issue.

The Windows Phone version includes content from the first Minion Rush update that appeared on iOS and Android. This includes the unlockable “El Macho’s Lair” environment. Subsequent updates added Mall and Beach levels, but those haven’t made it to Windows Phone yet. Our version will get those levels eventually, though Gameloft doesn’t plan to release other platforms’ minor seasonal updates on Windows platforms.

Gameloft’s press release suggested that Minion Rush would have an exclusive landscape orientation mode on Windows platforms. Normally, the game is played in a portrait orientation. However, I haven’t been able to get landscape to kick in. It could be that only the Windows 8 version will have it and the signal got a little crossed on Gameloft’s end. Our contact at the publisher is investigating, and we’ll update when we hear back. Update: Only the Windows 8 version supports landscape, which is fine.

Minion Rush is free to play and supported by optional In-App Purchases. It runs on devices with 512 MB of RAM or more, so all Windows Phone 8 owners can enjoy it. We’ll have more Minion Rush coverage soon!

Despicable Me Minion Rush

It was only a few days ago when we covered the release of Despicable Me Minion Rush for Windows Phone, but already the popular title has received an update, bumping the game to version 1.0.0.1. Since this is such a minor update, we can only assume that bug fixes have been implemented, alongside some possible optimisations.

Unfortunately, Gameloft have failed to provide a changelog for the Despicable Me update, but should you notice anything else that's new or improved, be sure to shout out in the comments. If you haven't yet downloaded the game we strongly urge you to do so, especially if you're one who loves both endless runners and the Despicable Me movies.

You can download Despicable Me Minion Rush from the Windows Phone Store for free (Windows Phone 8). Thanks, Edipose, for the tip!

Infinite Runner Game Roundup

Windows Phone Central Gaming Roundup: Endless Runners

Endless Runner games, also know to some as Infinite Runner games, are a fantastic way to pass the time with and there are plenty to choose from in the Windows Phone Store.  You know the games, the ones where the gaming character runs, jumps, dodges, and tumbles through various obstacles and dangers.  You run as far as possible before you eventually take a wrong turn, jump a little too late, or otherwise find your character stumble to their fate.

While this genre of games seems to be multiplying faster than weather apps, we shine the light on four of the top rated endless runners that are available in the Windows Phone Store for this week's roundup.  All four titles were highly anticipated titles that are drawn-up nicely and would be a great addition to your Windows Phone gaming library.

Minion Rush

Minion Rush (free)

The hit movie Despicable Me spawned a collection of humorous characters called minions who are the little yellow sidekicks for the movies main character, Gru.  The minion’s high-pitched giggles and comedic antics easily brings a smile to everyone’s face.  As one would guess,  Minion Rush is a Windows Phone 8 game featuring these little yellow fellows.

Minion Rush
Minion Rush Main Menu and Costume Shop

Minion Rush is a wonderfully animated game where you have to race your little minion down the halls of a Gru’s scientific lab, through the neighborhood streets and El Macho’s lair.  Along the way these little guys collect bananas that can be used in the game’s shop to buy upgrades, boost and costumes.

Dangers range from school buses, bombs, fire hydrants, road signs, and passenger cars.  Bonus items are available that will turn your minion into a Mega Minion where he stomps the little minions, shield your minion from dangers, place him on a rocket to zip through the course, and more.

Minion Rush
Minion Rush Gru's Lab, Rocket Launch and Residential Scenes

Minion Rush also has a few boss fights where you duck and dodge attacks from various characters from the Despicable Me movie.  There are also side missions/goals that you can strive for that allows the game to go beyond just seeing how far you can run.

Game play is accomplished by a series of screen swipes and dynamic camera angles follow your character through thick and thin.  The only thing missing is a few downloadable minion ringtones.

Minion Rush is a great gaming option for passing short bits of time or when you have a little longer gaming time to burn.  It is a free game available for Windows Phone 8 (including the low-memory devices such as the Nokia Lumia 520).  There are a few in-app purchases available to build up your banana and token stash that you can spend in the game shop.

You can find Minion Rush here in the Windows Phone Store.

Temple Run 2

Temple Run 2 (free)

Temple Run 2 is the latest edition of the Temple Run gaming series.  You have the original Temple Run, Temple Run Oz and Temple Run Brave.  The latter two are based on the movies that share the same name.  Temple Run 2, unlike the other titles, is an Xbox Windows Phone gaming title, which lends itself to Xbox Live achievements and leaderboards.

Temple Run 2
Temple Run 2's Main Screen and Menu Options

Once again, you are tasked with running, jumping, sliding and turning to escape the temple with the cursed idol with Temple Run 2.  All while a giant ape-like monster is chasing you.  Movement is accomplished by a series of screen swipes and the pace of the game has a little zip to it.

Stumble and a monstrous creature that is chasing you will tear you from limb to limb.  Misjudge a jump, turn left when you should turn right, or blink at the wrong time your character will meet his doom as well.

As with the other infinite running games, as you race to safety you can collect coins (Minions collect bananas) that can be used in the game’s shop to purchase upgrades, boost, and unlock additional characters.

Temple Run 2
Temple Run 2 Game Screen and Scoring Summary

The only downside (and it is a small one) to Temple Run 2 is that it takes noticeably longer to load than the other Temple Run games.  It isn’t all bad though.  The longer load time gives you a few seconds to clear your mind and get ready for the run.

Of the four games in this week’s roundup, Temple Run 2 might be the least forgiving.  Barely miss a turn, jump or slide and that hairy beast could catch you.  While all of the endless runner games in this week's roundup has a quick pace, Temple Run 2 feels as though it has a little more pep to it.  The slightest glance away from the screen could find your character missing a turn or running off a cliff.

Graphics and animations are very respectable, game play challenging and Temple Run 2 shares the previous versions addictive quality.  Temple Run 2, like the original, is a free game.  It is available for Windows Phone 8 devices and you can pick up your copy here in the Windows Phone Store.

Temple Run 2 is currently not available for low-memory devices such as the Nokia Lumia 520.

Rail Rush

Rail Rush (free)

Rail Rush is an infinite runner that relies on your ability to steer a run-away mine cart instead of your foot speed.  The Windows Phone 8 game is currently an exclusive to Lumia Windows Phones and was recently updated to add a Christmas theme into the mix.

Rail Rush places you in a runaway mine cart that is racing through an endless mine shaft.  You have to steer your cart from side to side, duck inside it, and lean the cart to one side or the other to avoid various dangers.

Rail Rush
Rail Rush Main Menu and Gaming Options

The game includes six different worlds that include hidden levels.  Rail Rush includes two worlds, the Christmas themed world and a Halloween themed world free.  Two additional worlds are available through in-app purchases ($1.49 each).

Controlling your mine car is accomplished by a series of screen swipes and by leaning your Windows Phone left or right.  Leaning your phone allows your miner to reach out and collect gems and gold nuggets that can be spent in the game’s shop.  You can buy additional heroes, cart boost/upgrades, and other bonus items from the shop.  In-app purchases are available as well to buy nuggets and some bonus items.

Rail Rush
Rail Rush Worlds Menu and Game Play

The further you travel down the mine, the faster the pace becomes.  You really need to stay on your toes to avoid hitting turn styles, barricades, or simply miss that the track runs out.

Rail Rush is a fun game to pass short bit of time with and does have an addictive quality that helps the game last a little bit longer if needed.  It is a nice change of pace from similar games that have you running all over the place.

Rail Rush is a free game and is currently an exclusive to the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone lineup (it will play on the low-memory devices).  You can find Rail Rush here in the Nokia Collection of the Windows Phone Store.

Subway Surfers

Subway Surfers (free)

Subway Surfers has seen its fair share of success over on iOS and Android platforms.  After much anticipation, the infinite runner game landed in the Windows Phone Store just a few weeks ago.

The game has your racing through the train stations of London.  The developers even added a Christmas theme to the game with holiday decorations and instead of running from the grumpy train inspector you are running from Santa.

Subway Surfers
Subway Surfers Main Menu and Surfer Shop

As you duck, dodge and race along the train tracks you can collect coins that can be used in the game’s shop to purchase upgrades, boosts, gear and unlock additional subway surfing characters.

Along with running around the various obstacles, you can tap the screen at times to activate your hover board and zip between the trains.  Bonus items will line the tracks to help your surfer survive the run such as jet packs, pogo sticks, and bouncy shoes.  However, if you stumble ever so slightly the inspector (or Santa) will catch you.  Even if you successfully out run the inspector, misjudging a jump or a dodge can send you head first into a train, which is never good.

Subway Surfers
Subway Surfers Game Screens

Subway Surfers also includes a collection of side-missions to help keep the game fresh.  Missions such as collecting a certain amount of coins in a run, jump a certain number of times in a run, etc.

All totaled, Subway Surfers is another quality gaming option for your Windows Phone and the Windows Phone version should share just as much success as the other versions have experienced.

Subway Surfers is a free game, available for Windows Phone 8 devices.  You do have a few in-app purchases for coins and keys bundles to give you a head start in buying boosts, gear and other items from the game’s shop.

You can find Subway Surfers here in the Windows Phone Store.  Subway Surfers is currently not available for low-memory devices such as the Nokia Lumia 520.

What is the best gaming option?

What is the best gaming option?  It is a coin toss.  All four gaming titles are highly rated and rightfully so.

The Temple Run series gives Windows Phone gamers the option to choose a themed version of the game or stick with the standard version.  Either way, game play is challenging, entertaining and addictive.

Rail Rush gives you the option of racing through various worlds that can keep the game’s scenery from getting old.  While you are not running through the mine, piloting your mining cart can be just as challenging.  Some may say more challenging.

It is hard to find anything wrong with Minion Rush or Subway Surfers as well.  Both games have outstanding graphics and animations, game play is challenging, and there are plenty of side missions/goals to keep the game from growing stale.

These four gaming titles are a small sampling of the infinite or endless running games available in the Windows Phone Store.  If we have missed your favorite, sound off below in the comments and share your favorite running game.

Readit

Readit 1.4.2.0

We understand there's nothing more pleasing on a hot Summer's day (or a rather chilly Winter one) than sitting down with a beverage and scroll through hundreds of published reddit stories, be it your favourite cats, memes or simple WTF moments. For Windows Phone, Readit is a super popular, unofficial Reddit client, which has been updated to address a bug introduced in the previous release.

"Touch target improvement introduced a new margin for the subreddit view and for some reason the correct subreddit view file did not get in the submitted package."

A minor update, but worth noting. Download Readit from the Windows Phone Store for $1.99 (free trial available).

Minion Rush

Despicable Me: Minion Rush 1.0.0.4

Despicable Me: Minion Rush is a humorous endless runner, which we featured in our top endless runner games roundup. The game features the cute, funny characters we've come to know and love from the hit movie and recently Gameloft released an update to the title on the Windows Phone Store.

While it's not known what version 1.0.0.4 brought to the table, we're assuming this is another minor fix. Our tipster, Himanshu Chowdhary, believes there have been improvements implemented to further optimise the game across a variety of Windows Phones (we're talking about the Lumia 920 and Lumia 520). It's also noted there aren't as many frame rate drop issues with this latest version.

While there are reportedly still some problems, let us know if you've noticed any improvement in the update. You can grab Minion Rush for free from the Windows Phone Store.

Windows Phone Central Roundup: Minion Apps and Games

Tough week down South dealing with the snowpocalypse so we are taking a lighthearted approach to this week’s Windows Phone Central Roundup by focusing on Minions.

For those not familiar, Minions are little yellow sidekicks of the evil scientist Gru from the popular Despicable Me movies.  They are a collection of lively little fellows whose giggles and antics will bring a smile to your face.

There are a handful of Minion oriented apps and games in the Windows Phone Store and we picked four that stood out.  Some are fairly simple in design and concept while others are rather appealing titles.

Minions Factory

Minions Factory (free)

Minions Factory is a nice collection of lockscreen wallpapers and ringtones that are Minion oriented.  You also have the ability to create your own Minion and save them as a wallpaper image.

Minions Factory
Minions Factory Menu and Create Screens

Minions Factory is listed as a game so you will have to go to your Games Hub to launch it.  From the opening screen the user interface is simple, just tap the “Start Game” button and choose where you want to go.  Your options are to create a Minion, visit the soundboard or view the lockscreen options.

Minion customization lets you choose the Minion’s hairstyle, eyewear and mouth.  Once created you can name you Minion, save it to your Pictures Hub and share it with friends.  The soundboard has twenty-six sound bites that can be saved to your Windows Phone and used as a ringtone or alert tone.

Minions Factory
Minions Factory Sound and Wallpaper Screens

The lockscreen wallpaper collection includes six Minion images that can be saved to your Windows Phone Pictures Hub and set as your lockscreen image.

Minions Factory is a nice collection of ringtones and wallpapers.  If you are a Minion fan, it should be on your short list of apps.  It is a free app, available for Windows Phone 8 devices and you can find Minions Factory here in the Windows Phone Store.

Minion Rush

Minion Rush (free)

Minion Rush is the heavy weight title in this week’s roundup.  Minion Rush has fantastic graphics, entertaining game play and just an overall fun gaming title.

For those not familiar, Minion Rush is an endless runner game where you play the role of a Minion who has to duck, dodge and jump over obstacles as they run through Gru’s laboratory, Gru’s neighborhood and El Macho’s Lair.  As you avoid running into things, you collect bananas that can be used to upgrade your Minion and power-ups.

Minion Rush
Minion Rush Menu, Game Screen and Store

You do have some in-game Boss battles and specialty items that will give your Minion a performance boost (ride Fluffy the Unicorn, jump on a rocket, or become a Mega-Minion giant).

Again, animations are great and game play challenging.  Minion Rush also has flexibility to satisfy brief gaming spurts or longer gaming sessions.  It is a free game with in-app purchase opportunities (buying bananas and tokens to use in the Store).

Minion Rush is available for Windows Phone 8 and you can find it here in the Windows Phone Store.

Minions Ringtone

Minions Ringtone (free)

While Minion Rush is the heavyweight of the group, Minion Ringtone is probably the lightweight of the bunch.  Still, the collection of ringtones with Minions Ringtone has a certain appeal.

The app has twenty-one Minion styled ringtones ranging from a text message alert to the banana song.  There is even a Christmas Minion tone for the Holiday Season.

Minions Ringtone
Minions Ringtone

The Minion Ringtone interface is about as simple as it can get.  Just tap the play arrow on the ringtone banner to preview the tone and add it to your Windows Phone ringtone library.  It is an easy way to liven up your ringtones and alerts.

Minions Ringtone is a free app that is available for Windows Phone 8 and 7.x devices.  You can find Minions Ringtone here in the Windows Phone Store.

Minions Jumpe

Minions Jump (free)

Minions Jump is a Windows Phone game for the endless jumper fans in the crowd.  The platform game has four playable Minions whose goal is to jump from platform to platform in hopes of reaching the moon.

You control your Minion by tilting your Windows Phone left or right.  One missed platform, your Minion will fall from the sky, and the game ends.  The higher you go, the greater your score and to give your points total a boost, you can collect bananas along the way.  The game also has Evil Minions floating about that will also ruin your day.

Minions Jump
Minions Jump Menu, Minion Choice and Game Screens

Minions Jump is a decent game for your Windows Phone.  The further you jump the more challenging the game becomes.  If you are a fan of the Minions and are looking for a fun game to pass the time with Minions Jump is worth a try.

Minions Jump is a free game that is available for Windows Phone 8 and 7.x devices.  You can find your copy of Minions Jump here in the Windows Phone Store.

Stand Outs?

The obvious stand out in this week’s roundup has to be Minion Rush.  Game play is entertaining and the graphics/animations are well done.  It is hard to go wrong with Minion Rush.  Minions Jump is not a bad option but lacks the game play options and challenges of Minion Rush.

After Minion Rush, Minions Factory stands out for its wide range of offerings.  There are other apps that offer lockscreen wallpapers and ringtones separately but Minions Factory is a one-stop shop (plus you can build your own Minion).  Minions Ringtone is a nice collection of ringtones but without wallpaper images, it takes a back seat to Minions Factory.

Now it is your turn.  Did we overlook your favorite Minion game or app?  Is there a Minion app or game not available that you would like to see come to Windows Phone or has the Minion fascination already become yesterday’s news?  Feel free to sound off in the comments below with your thoughts on the subject.

Despicable Me: Minion Rush temporarily pulled due to 'superpowers mode'

$

File this one under funny, but Despicable Me: Minion Rush is now missing from the Window Phone Store.

Don’t you worry though, we’re expecting the game to pop back probably within in a few hours and here’s why. This morning, an update went out for the popular and adorable endless runner. Some of our readers have even reported better support for 512 MB devices (meaning yes, it seems faster), though we have not been able to verify.

The reason it was removed? Evidently this morning’s release had a ‘dev tools’ section, which gave users superpowers, including “Invincibility, the ability to add bananas and tokens, unlock all costumes, puzzle pieces, spawn any powerups [sic]”, so says Reddit user groznyjgrad and a few others.

In short, the developers goofed on the XAP submission and have yanked the app, at least temporarily. Luckily with the new improved Store submission process, the correct version could be live in the next few hours, and that’s what we expect.

It’s a funny little story and if you have the special, super version, chime in on comments (and maybe avoid the next update?). Check on the status of the app by following this Store link.

Rail Rush

Subway Surfers

Subway Surfers (free)

Subway Surfers has seen its fair share of success over on iOS and Android platforms.  After much anticipation, the infinite runner game landed in the Windows Phone Store just a few weeks ago.

The game has your racing through the train stations of London.  The developers even added a Christmas theme to the game with holiday decorations and instead of running from the grumpy train inspector you are running from Santa.

App Update Roundup

Updates, updates, updates! Get your updates here! Kicking off the new week, we have three apps that have been bumped to new versions on the Windows Phone Store. MoWeather is joined by Readit and Minion Rush. Head on past the break to learn what's new in each of the covered apps.

MoWeather HD

MoWeather 1.2.5.0

So this is a rather large update. The developer of MoWeather has released version 1.2.5.0 of the app, including numerous new feature and additions. If you're not familiar with the app itself, MoWeather is a super attractive weather app for Windows Phone, offering gorgeous animations for accurate weather readings. While there are multiple weather apps available, we recommend you check this one out.

Here's what's new in version 1.2.5.0:

  • New lockscreen and live tile design.
  • Update weather data of tile and lockscreen timely.
  • Support 3 kinds of tile and 6 ways to flip.
  • Fix locating bug. Improve access to accurate local weather.
  • Support for 21 countries and regions.

We're digging the new tile and lockscreen designs, not to mention the added customisation just in case you wish to have data displayed your own unique way. You can download MoWeather from the store for free using this link or the QR code below.
